In response to increasing poverty levels throughout the world, Old Dominion University (ODU) in Norfolk, Virginia, has integrated a global health certification into the Master of Science in Dental Hygiene program to prepare future oral health professionals for the challenges of treating patients across the globe. The new program is designed to help students gain an international perspective and build leadership skills as part of an interdisciplinary collaboration.

The certification will include courses that employ a transdisciplinary approach, challenging students to think outside their field while remaining within a collaborative environment. The decision to offer this certification was based on the positive results of a global oral health course offered at ODU for the first time during the 2013-2014 school year. The university hopes that students in other disciplines, such as nursing, physical therapy, public health, international studies, public administration, and engineering, will also enroll in the program, which will greatly benefit the knowledge base of graduate dental hygiene students.
