Dedicated to the oral health care of medically complex patients with a focus on the oral-systemic link, the American Academy of Oral Medicine (AAOM) has introduced an academic affiliate fellowship program that enables health care professionals, including dental hygienists, to earn the AAOM academic fellowship credential. It is obtained through several steps. First, potential fellows must obtain an affiliate membership for 1 year and then pass an examination. Applicants need to attend at least two annual meetings over the course of 2 years. Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in oral medicine via teaching, completing a residency, maintaining a hospital affiliation, publishing, or completing education in oral medicine. After these items are complete, applicants should submit an application and resume that detail these accomplishments.
