Will Masks Be Back Due to Delta Variant?

The Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2 that originated in India has now spread across the entire 50 states. With its ease of transmission and its ability to cause more severe illness than other variants, will Americans don masks en masse once again? The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns that with half of the nation remaining unvaccinated and children returning to in-person school this fall, the likelihood of another COVID-19 surge is high. In response to the rapid spread of the Delta variant, some areas—such as Los Angeles—are once again reinstating mask mandates for indoor spaces, regardless of vaccination status.
