According to the National Institute for Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) high-potency fluoride gels (either 0.4% SnF or 1.1% NaF) delivered via custom applicator trays are recommended for patients undergoing cancer treatment including chemotherapy and/or radiation to the head and neck. It is recommended that the 10-minute daily fluoride applications begin several days before cancer treatment starts. It is also recommended to use unflavored fluoride and if the patient does not want to use trays the high-potency fluoride gel can be brushed on the teeth. If the patient has any porcelain or glass ionomer restoration the neutral pH fluoride (1.1% NaF) is to be used. I tend to favor the 1.1% NaF gel due to its higher concentration of fluoride (5,000 ppm) versus the 0.4% SnF (1,000 ppm).
