Midwestern University Unites Dental and Physical Therapy Students to Prevent Work-Related Injuries
Midwestern University has initiated an interdisciplinary program where physical therapy students assess dental students’ ergonomics during clinical procedures, aiming to prevent musculoskeletal disorders and promote career longevity. This collaboration provides practical experience for physical therapy students while offering dental students personalized strategies to improve posture and reduce injury risk.
In a pioneering interdisciplinary initiative, Midwestern University in Downers Grove, Illinois, has brought together students from its physical therapy and dental programs to address the prevalent issue of work-related musculoskeletal disorders among dental professionals. Physical therapy students observed dental students during patient examinations at the University’s Multispecialty Clinic, evaluating their posture, movements, and ergonomic practices. Utilizing the Quick Exposure Checklist, they assessed risk factors such as neck, back, and wrist positioning, load handling, and movement frequency. Following the assessments, physical therapy students provided personalized feedback, including preventive exercises and ergonomic adjustments, to help dental students mitigate injury risks. This collaboration not only enhances the practical skills of physical therapy students but also equips future dentists with essential strategies to maintain their health and extend their careers.
