As the United States grapples with a dental care crisis, dental therapy is often mentioned as a possible solution. This program will discuss the role of dental therapists in improving access to care and how this will affect the practice of dental hygiene. The different types of dental therapists working today will be defined as well as their educational paths. The current status of dental therapy education programs in the US will be provided. The presenter will share about her work in a pilot dental therapy program, which teaches dental hygienists with restorative endorsements the additional skills of dental therapists.
