The New York University College of Dentistry (NYU Dentistry) has received a $13.3 million award from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) to study caries prevention, quality of life, and school performance. Richard Niederman, DMD, professor and chair of the Department of Epidemiology and Health Promotion, and Ryan Richard Ruff, MPH, PhD, assistant professor, director of the Master of Science Program in Clinical Research, and director of Biostatistics Core in the Department of Epidemiology and Health Promotion, will lead the 5-year study comparing the effectiveness of silver diamine fluoride application with sealant placement and fluoride application on caries prevention in school settings. The study will be conducted in elementary schools in the Bronx, an area with few oral health care professionals or low-cost dental clinics.

The caries-prevention techniques will be provided by nurses and dental hygienists from the NYU Rory Meyers College of Nursing. The researchers will also compare the care delivered by nurses vs dental hygienists. This collaboration is part of NYU Meyers’ efforts to expand oral health nursing education.

PCORI—an independent, nonprofit organization—funds research that provides patients, caregivers, and clinicians with the evidence-based information needed to make well-informed health-care decisions.
