The third installment of the continuing education (CE) series created in partnership with the American Academy of Periodontology and sponsored through an educational grant provided by Colgate looks at the effects of aging on the periodontium and what this means for the practicing clinician. Written by Sivaraman Prakasam, BDS, MSD, PhD—an assistant professor in the Department of Periodontology at Oregon Health & Sciences University in Portland—the piece explores the difficulty in ascertaining whether certain periodontal health problems are due to normal aging or a developing disease process. The author also advises clinicians on the importance of educating older adult patients about the changes to periodontal health that accompany aging and reinforcing preventive/protective measures to support periodontal health. This informative CE article offers the opportunity to earn 2 CE units.
