Pro Bono Program Expands Its Reach

In January, the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) announced that its existing pro bono program, Donated Orthodontic Services, would expand nationwide—allowing greater opportunity for low-income children across the United States to receive necessary orthodontic treatment. Prior to this announcement, Donated Orthodontic Services operated in nine states. Since 2009, nearly 500 patients have been treated in Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, New Jersey, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Michigan, and Virginia.

Pro bono treatments offered through the program are made possible through the generosity of the AAO’s 18,000 orthodontist members. Their combined time and talents have improved the functionality and esthetics of countless smiles, with that number set to exponentially increase with the program’s expansion. Patients are matched to providers via the Dental Lifeline Network.

Donated Orthodontic Services expects to perform free treatment for 250 patients in 2016. Such treatment is also supported through corporate partnerships with manufacturers such as DENTSPLY GAC International and Align Technologies.
