SYNOPSIS

Morning Lecture

Autoimmune Diseases: Systemic and Oral Health Considerations

Approximately 2% of the population suffers from autoimmune disease and most of these individuals are women. The diseases themselves, as well as the medication management, can adversely affect the oral cavity and significantly impact quality of life. This course will highlight common autoimmune diseases, oral and systemic disease manifestations, and appropriate dental hygiene interventions.

Afternoon Lecture

Stats, Facts, Myths and Downright Lies

What defines the recall interval? Does everyone need to floss? Dental hygienists depend upon scientific evidence to help guide their decision-making throughout the dental hygiene process of care. This course will help support best practices by exploring the science behind common beliefs, perceptions and myths that define dental hygiene practice. Participants will critique the evidence that supports or refutes current practices, and evaluate the impact of evidence on guiding professional judgment and behavior. Challenges that clinicians face with using an evidence-based practice philosophy will be discussed, including how to identify tricks with statistics and how to differentiate fact from fiction. Clinicians will leave this course with a better understanding of how to use information to support treatment recommendations for better patient care.

UPON COMPLETION YOU WILL BE ABLE TO:

    Morning:
  • Describe the pathophysiology of immune system dysfunction.
  • Identify common signs and symptoms of various autoimmune diseases.
  • Discuss the classes of drugs that are frequently used to treat autoimmune diseases.
  • Identify oral manifestations of common autoimmune diseases.
  • Recognize the adverse oral and systemic complications associated with medications used to treat autoimmune diseases.
  • Discuss the effects of chronic steroid use on the human body.
  • Identify important practice management considerations when planning dental hygiene care for patients with autoimmune disease.

All speakers must disclose to the audience any proprietary, financial or other personal interest of any nature or kind, in any product, service, source and/or company, or in any firm beneficially associated therewith that will be discussed or considered during their presentation. The Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC does not view the existence of these interests or uses as implying bias or decreasing the value to participants. The Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC, along with ADA CERP, feels that this disclosure is important for the participants to form their own judgment about each presentation.
