Brazilian researchers report that smoking negatively affects the peri-implant microbiome, resulting in a disease-associated state, even in clinically healthy individuals.

Brazilian researchers report that smoking negatively affects the peri-implant microbiome, resulting in a disease-associated state, even in clinically healthy individuals.

Peri-implant biofilm was collected from healthy, screwed-retained, teeth-surrounded implants in 12 nonsmokers and 12 smoker nonperiodontal subjects. An abundance of FusobacteriumTannerella and Mogibacterium  was found in smokers, whereas ActinomycesCapnocytophaga and Streptococcus was found in nonsmokers.

The study, Smoking Habit Modulated Peri-Implant Microbiome: A Case-Control Study,” was published in the Journal of Periodontal Research.
