Study of French Dentists and Assistants Does Not Find an Increased Risk for COVID-19 Among Oral Health Professionals

A study of more 4,100 dentists and 1,860 dental assistants in France found that they were not at higher risk for COVID-19 than the general public, with the exception of specialties in which large amounts of aerosols were generated such as periodontics. The French oral healthcare delivery system does not include a position similar to the American dental hygienist. The survey results showed that 1.9% of dentists and 0.8% of dental assistants had tested positive for SARS-CoV-2. The most significant risk factors for COVID-19 among the oral health professionals were kidney disease and obesity. The lowest risk was found in endodontic practices, while the highest risk was associated with periodontal practices. The presence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and the use of public transportation also raised the likelihood of contracting COVID-19. Click here to read more.
