Public Comment Sought on License Portability

After lobbying from the American Dental Association and the American Dental Hygienists’ Association, the United States Department of Defense earmarked the professions of dentistry and dental hygiene for support in developing license portability through legislation. As the licensure process for dentists and dental hygienists varies from state to state, clinicians often face an uphill battle before they can practice after moving to a new state. This process frequently includes a significant financial and time commitment as well as an additional licensing examination. With the support of the Council of State Governments, the first step in improving license portability—creating a draft of the model legislation—is done. The draft is currently available for public comment through the end of September. After the commenting period has closed, a revised draft will be released, most likely at the start of 2023.
