Pioneering AI at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry
The University of Maryland School of Dentistry is launching an innovative AI research division to revolutionize disease diagnosis and dental predictive models. The school’s mission focuses on developing transparent, explainable AI to enhance clinical decision-making and build trust in AI-assisted healthcare.
The University of Maryland School of Dentistry (UMSOD) in Baltimore is embarking on a groundbreaking journey in artificial intelligence (AI) with its new Division of AI Research, directed by Ahmed Sultan, BDS, PhD, and Jeffery B. Price, DDS, MS. This ambitious initiative aims to push the boundaries of AI-assisted diagnostics, focusing on precision, transparency, and improved patient outcomes. The division, housed in the Department of Oncology and Diagnostic Sciences, boasts a multidisciplinary team comprising faculty, post-doctoral researchers, and students. By leveraging vast datasets, including rare oral diseases and cancer information, the division collaborates with UMSOD, the University of Maryland School of Medicine, and external AI experts to advance the potential of AI in oral and maxillofacial medicine, pathology, and radiology. A key goal is to develop AI models that provide explainable, interpretable results, addressing public concerns about AI in healthcare and enabling clinicians to trust and confidently apply AI findings in their practice.
