NIH Funds Research on Oral Effects of HIV

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) awarded Case Western University School of Dental Medicine $3.25 million to investigate the oral health effects of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). More than 30% of those with HIV develop oral complications, ranging from oral lesions to oral cancer. The 5-year study will take a close look at the malfunction of regulatory T-cells, which provide signals in a properly functioning immune system, and how this leads to negative oral effects among patients with HIV.
