More Than 70% of Americans Are Immune to Omicron Variant of SARS-CoV-2

This challenging winter with skyrocketing COVID-19 case numbers due to the quick transmissibility of the Omicron variant is winding down. While the explosion of COVID-19 across the United States was disheartening, it has left 73% of Americans with immunity against SARS-CoV-2. According to AP News, about half of the nation has been boosted with a COVID-19 vaccine and more than 80 million have been infected with the novel coronavirus. These facts should mean that less virus is out there to infect people. While public health experts have little hope for herd immunity due to vaccine hesitancy, the rapidly changing virus, and the brevity of immunity offered by vaccines and infection, many Americans are returning to pre-pandemic activities.
