Medicare Will Now Pay for At-Home Rapid COVID-19 Tests
When the federal government announced that private health insurers would cover the cost of up to eight at-home rapid COVID-19 tests per month for their policyholders on January 15, Medicare was not included—leaving millions of Americans out of luck. This decision was quite unpopular, thus, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services announced on February 2 that Medicare will also provide its enrollees with access to free over-the-counter COVID-19 tests. The Medicare plan will enable participants to pick up the free tests from participating pharmacies with Medicare reimbursing the pharmacies for the cost of the tests.
