Major Data Breach in Dental Practice Highlights Need to Tighten Cybersecurity

A Wisconsin-based dental care provider suffered a significant data breach due to a ransomware attack, exposing sensitive patient and financial information. This incident underscores the urgent need for dental practices to enhance their cybersecurity measures to protect patient data.

On July 16, 2024, First Choice Dental (FCD) reported a data breach to the Attorney General of Maine following a ransomware attack that compromised its IT network. The breach, discovered on October 22, 2023, allowed unauthorized access to sensitive information, including names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, passport numbers, driver’s license numbers, financial account details, and health information. FCD swiftly disconnected its systems and collaborated with third-party cybersecurity experts to investigate the incident. The review concluded in May 2024, identifying the scope of compromised data and affected individuals.

This breach highlights a critical vulnerability in dental practice cybersecurity. Dentists must prioritize robust data protection strategies to safeguard patient information and maintain trust. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential risks and repercussions of inadequate cybersecurity measures. FCD began notifying affected individuals on July 12, 2024, detailing the specific data compromised.

Founded in 1996 and based in Madison, Wisconsin, First Choice Dental operates 12 locations and offers comprehensive dental services. The company employs more than 110 staff and generates approximately $10 million annually.
