Interval for Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 Boosters Shortened From 6 Months to 5 Months

As the United States continues to break records with skyrocketing COVID-19 case numbers, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) changed its recommendation for the Pfizer and Moderna booster shots. Individuals who have received two doses of either the Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccines should receive a booster shot 5 months after the second dose, not 6 months as was originally thought. The Pfizer booster is available for those ages 12 and older; the Moderna vaccines and booster are for those ages 18 and older. This change is motivated by the highly transmissible Omicron variant that has been sweeping the nation.
