Human Microbiome Study Underway
A multidisciplinary team of researchers is currently investigating the human microbiome in an attempt to better understand the microorganisms that live there. Such an understanding, the researchers believe, will enable the oral health community to better appreciate the microbiome and its roles in health and disease. Researchers at the University of Buffalo (UB) in New York will conduct this groundbreaking research in a new center on campus, appropriately named the UB Center for Microbiome Research.
Robert J. Genco, PhD, DDS—State University of New York Distinguished Professor in the Department of Oral Biology, School of Dental Medicine—has been appointed director of the UB Center for Microbiome Research. Genco is an expert in microbiome research and an innovator in the study of the oral-systemic link. He is well known for his research on the connection between periodontal diseases and cardiovascular disease, stroke, and diabetes. Genco will oversee even more in-depth analysis of the microbiome and its impact on oral health and systemic disease. Such knowledge may lead to the discovery of novel approaches to controlling disease and maintaining oral and overall health.
