Dental Student Creates Rubik’s Cube Portrait of Women’s Basketball Star
University of Iowa dental student Brian Dang, BSE, merges his love for Rubik’s Cubes and art to create portraits, with his latest masterpiece being a 720-Rubik’s Cube rendition of Iowa women’s basketball star Caitlin Clark. Dang honed his Rubik’s Cube skills to mere seconds, finding a creative outlet by incorporating them into three-dimensional art during dental school. His fascination with Clark’s basketball prowess sparked the idea to merge his newfound artistry with his admiration for her achievements. Using an Excel spreadsheet to plan the placement of each Rubik’s Cube, Dang meticulously pieced together Clark’s portrait, capturing her image with limited colors. The project, requiring hundreds of Rubik’s Cubes, proved both challenging and costly, but Dang found a bulk supplier to reduce expenses. The finished portrait, weighing more than 20 pounds, was proudly displayed at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. Dang’s integration of art and dentistry reflects his belief in dentistry as an art form, akin to Clark’s approach to basketball. Both strive to achieve a collective goal, whether it’s rebuilding smiles or leading a team to victory. Click here to read more.
