Dental Implants Shine for Women with Primary Sjögren Disease

A recent study demonstrates that dental implants provide a safe and effective option for women with primary Sjögren disease, improving their oral health and quality of life over 5 years.

A new study published in Clinical Oral Implants Research highlights the effectiveness of dental implants in women experiencing primary Sjögren disease, a condition characterized by dry mouth and increased dental issues. Researchers from the University of Copenhagen conducted a 5-year prospective study comparing 23 women with primary Sjögren to 24 age-matched women without the disease. The findings indicate that single dental implants are not only feasible but also result in improved periodontal health and esthetic outcomes similar to those of healthy counterparts.

The study notes that patients with Sjögren experienced a higher mean DMFT score — reflecting more decayed, missing, or filled teeth — compared to controls shortly after implant placement. However, all implants remained stable throughout the study period, with no significant complications or differences in plaque buildup or bone loss between the two groups. While participants with Sjögren reported more severe dry mouth symptoms and inflamed gingiva, the long-term results showed significant improvements in their oral health-related quality of life.

The researchers concluded that dental implants are a valid and effective option for replacing missing teeth in women with primary Sjögren disease, providing an alternative to partial dentures or fixed prosthetics. This study encourages oral health professionals to consider dental implants as a primary treatment option for this demographic, reinforcing the importance of comprehensive care in managing both oral and systemic health for patients with autoimmune conditions.
