Dental Care Access Expands Significantly in Maine

Maine residents who are covered by the state’s health insurance plan for low-income individuals—MaineCare—will now have access to dental care due to a bill passed by the Maine Legislature. The new dental benefit will cover diagnostic, preventive, and restorative services. MaineCare insures about 200,000 state residents. Dentists remain scarce in Maine with approximately 55 dentists per 100,000 people. The average across the United States is 61 dentists per 100,000. The new dental coverage went into effect on July 1.
