COVID-19 May Offer Clues to Other Viral Infections

Symptoms now inextricably linked to COVD-19 illness—such as loss of taste and smell and heart inflammation—are not unique to SARS-CoV-2. These symptoms and others are common to viral infections; however, research into why these symptoms accompany many viral infections was scarce. The global pandemic has changed that. With many more potential study subjects now available who have experienced loss of taste and/or smell or lung damage following respiratory infections and renewed scientific interest and funding, researchers may come to better understand how these associations work.
