COVID-19 Cases Among Children Are on the Rise

Over the past month, the number of COVID-19 cases among children has been trending upward. More than 70,000 new cases in children were reported between April 2 and April 8. Thus far, 3.54 million children have contracted COVID-19, representing about 13.5% of all SARS-CoV-2 cases in the United States. Vermont, Michigan, and Maine are the states with the highest numbers of childhood infections. Public health officials surmise that the spread of new COVID-19 variants and the return of many children to in-person school and other activities have led to this increase. Most children experience mild COVID-19 symptoms but researchers are unsure of whether an increase in cases will coincide with more serious health outcomes related to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Currently, the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine is available only to those age 16 and older, while the Moderna is for adults age 18 and older. Click here to read more.
