Educational Objectives

  2. Recognize barriers related to providing oral hygiene in the hospital setting.
  3. Describe an evidence-based oral hygiene algorithm for ventilated and nonventilated hospitalized patients.
  4. Identify the benefits of a having a dental hygienist in the hospital to provide quality and consistent oral hygiene to critically ill patients.

Sarah B. Hoerler, RDH, MS, is a practicing dental hygienist in the Department of Dental Specialties, Division of Periodontics at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and a community faculty member in the Department of Dental Hygiene at Metropolitan State University in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She has 18 years of clinical experience and has focused her research efforts on the oral healthcare of pregnant women and implant survival and/or pathology in relationship to consistency of dental hygiene therapy. Benjamin C. Hickox, APRN, CNS, DNP, is a clinical nurse specialist in the Cardiovascular Surgical Intensive Care Unit at the Mayo Clinic.
