CDC Advises Against Loosening COVID-19 Restrictions After Case Numbers Stall

With weeks of declining case numbers and increasing pandemic fatigue, many states are loosening COVID-19 restrictions, such as eliminating mask mandates and capacity restrictions. United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Rochelle Walensky, MD, MPH, warns that easing restrictions too soon could land us right back where we were a few months ago with 250,000 new cases per day. Recently, case numbers had fallen in the US to about 70,000 per day. However, this number seems to have stalled with little downward movement and may, in fact, be moving upward. With new variants of SARS-CoV-2 posing a threat even to those who have been vaccinated, Walensky suggests Americans stay the course and continue following pandemic restrictions.
