Can a Nasal Spray Prevent COVID-19?

Columbia University researchers have developed a nasal spray designed to prevent infection with the novel coronavirus, and an initial study conducted on ferrets demonstrates efficacy. While the study was small and has not undergone peer review yet, results showed that the lipopeptide-containing nasal spray was effective in blocking the novel coronavirus’ ability to replicate in ferrets, which catch viruses through the nose as do humans. The spray is reportedly inexpensive to produce and does not require refrigeration. The researchers have applied for a patent on the product and hope to obtain funding from a pharmaceutical company or the United States government’s Operation Warp Speed to begin clinical trials in humans.
