Kristin Dillow, RDH, MS, is a research dental hygienist and study coordinator for the Center for Oral and Systemic Diseases and a clinical associate in dental sleep medicine for the Department of Prosthodontics at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill School of Dentistry. The research she conducted on sleep apnea among dental patients while a student in the Master of Dental Hygiene Education program at UNC School of Dentistry earned two prestigious honors: the Research Excellence Award from the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine and first place in the DENTSPLY/American Dental Hygienists' Association Graduate Student Research Program. Preventive therapies and oral hygiene education before conception and during early pregnancy may help reduce the severity of periodontal diseases and the negative effects of inflammation on pregnancy.
