Letter to the Editor

Comment on Xerostomia As a 59-year-old hygienist taking estrogen/progesterone, I wanted to add to the article “Identifying Those at Risk” by Mahvash Navazesh, DMD, (September 2004). This year I experienced dry mouth and burning mouth syndrome. Postmenopausal women should definitely be added to the list of those experiencing symptoms. The quoted symptoms at the beginning of the article caught my attention as I could have written them. I don’t experience dry mouth and burning mouth at the same time. Burning mouth has more saliva but my tongue has very red borders and is painful. My own gynecologist seems unaware of these symptoms in postmenopausal women. I can definitely sympathize with my patients now since experiencing these painful problems. -Pat Holleran, RDH, Dumfries, Va
