Jacquelyn L. Fried, RDH, MS—an associate professor in the Department of Periodontics and director of interprofessional initiatives at the University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB) School of Dentistry—received the prestigious Irene Newman Award during the American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA) Annual Session in June in Pittsburgh. This award, sponsored by Colgate, is given in recognition of outstanding advancement of the art and science of dental hygiene. The honor is named for Irene Newman—the cousin of Alfred C. Fones, DDS—who effectively became the first dental hygienist more than a century ago.

Fried has been involved in dental hygiene education for nearly 40 years. She has served as director of the entry-level, graduate, and degree-completion programs at the UMB School of Dentistry. In 2015, Fried was named one of the top 100 women in Maryland. She may be best known for her promotion of the dental hygienist’s role in tobacco prevention and cessation; her expertise in head and neck cancers and the role of the human papillomavirus; her support for advanced dental hygiene practice roles and interprofessional education; and her love of scientific writing and editing. Fried is also a Dimensions of Dental Hygiene Editorial Advisory Board member.
