Tyler Junior College (TJC) in Tyler, Texas, recently expanded its course offerings to include a Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene program, and will soon graduate its first student. Mandy Camp, RDH, has worked as a dental hygienist for more than a decade and is the first to graduate with the newly offered bachelor’s degree—which was designed especially for working professionals. Two more students will graduate in December 2017.

The TJC Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene program’s inaugural class comprises 15 students, who began the program in the fall of 2016. Students can choose to complete the program in either a 1-year or 2-year sequence. The coursework is a combination of online classes and a weekly on-campus class.

According to TJC, this new program has presented opportunities to students who historically have turned to other cities to attain a bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene. “We are the first and only community or junior college in Texas authorized to offer a Bachelor of Science degree, and we are glad to provide this added level of education in dental hygiene in our area of the state,” says TJC’s Program Coordinator Julie Mettlen, RDH, MS.
