Fluoride varnish application is a key element of the caries-prevention armamentarium and dental hygienists need to remain up to date on its usage. This is the subject of the continuing education (CE) article “Use of Fluoride Varnish in Caries Prevention,” by Erin Relich, RDH, BSDH, MSA, an assistant professor and the dental hygiene clinical coordinator in the Division of Dental Hygiene at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry, and Durinda Mattana, RDH, BSDH, MS, an adjunct associate professor in the Division of Practice Essentials and Interprofessional Education at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry.

This 2-unit CE course is supported by an unrestricted educational grant from 3M Oral Care, and explores the clinical effectiveness of fluoride varnish in a comprehensive, customized fluoride program for individual patients. The authors also discuss the United States Food and Drug Administration approval process, the American Dental Association recommendations concerning fluoride varnish, patient populations that benefit from fluoride varnish application, and various fluoride varnish formulations and delivery systems. Click Here.
