
Antibiotic Resistance Grows in COVID-19 Era
As healthcare systems across the world struggled to effectively treat patients with COVID-19 with little data to go on, the use of antibiotics and other antimicrobials surged, leading to a dangerous rise in antibiotic resistance. According to the Pan American Health Organization, this may have dire results as formerly effective medications are rendered useless. Argentina, Uruguay, Ecuador, Guatemala, and Paraguay are reporting surging numbers of drug-resistant infections, which may also correlate to an increase in COVID-19-related mortality.
