UK Researchers Develop Oral Cancer Test With More Than 90% Accuracy

Researchers at the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom have developed an oral cancer test called “point-of-care analysis for noninvasive diagnosis of oral cancer,” or PANDORA, that offers 92% efficacy in identifying oral squamous cell carcinoma and 80% accuracy in detecting oral epithelial dysplasia. A cell analysis protocol, PANDORA evaluates several thousand cells simultaneously to ascertain their electrical properties. Healthy oral epithelial cells present differently than cancerous cells. The noninvasive test provides results in 10 seconds. Oral cancer has a high mortality rate as it is often detected in later stages.
