Sweetened Beverage Sales Bounced Back After Cook County Tax Repealed

A new study led by researchers at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) has found the sales of sweetened beverages went back to pre-tax levels following the repeal of the Cook County, Illinois, sweetened beverage tax.
The study, “Evaluation of Changes in Beverage Prices and Volume Sold Following the Implementation and Repeal of a Sweetened Beverage Tax in Cook County, Illinois,” published in JAMA Network Open, reports sweetened beverages increased in price by 1.13 cents per fluid ounce in Cook County while the tax was in place, and the volume of sweetened beverages sold in Cook County dropped by about 26%. However, after the repeal of the tax, the price of sweetened beverages dropped by 1.19 cents per fluid ounce, and the volume of sweetened beverages sold in the county increased by about 30%.
The tax, which included both sugar-sweetened and artificially-sweetened diet beverages, went into effect Aug. 2, 2017, and ended Dec. 1, 2017.
