School-Based Program Focuses on Caries Prevention

Mary Davis, PHDH, is the clinical director of CariedAway NH Concord.

An innovative caries prevention program, CariedAway NH Concord, is launching in three New Hampshire school districts — Concord, Pittsfield, and Merrimack Valley. Developed by researchers at New York University College of Dentistry and supported by a $1 million, 3-year award from Northeast Delta Dental, the program will use point-of-care technology to create individualized prevention plans. The program, administered twice yearly in schools, offers an evidence-based approach to preventing caries with the goal of setting children on a lifetime path of good oral health. Participating children receive oral health screenings, caries prevention and treatment, and a toothbrush and toothpaste. Caries prevention methods include the application of silver diamine fluoride and sealants. Children are also referred to local dentists to establish a permanent dental home or for more complex care. Mary Davis, PHDH, one of the program’s founders will serve as clinical director. CariedAway NH Concord will commence this month, benefitting 4,200 students across 13 elementary and middle schools, contributing to the broader mission of improving children’s oral health, quality of life, and academic performance.
