Research Released on Reducing Aerosol-Related Risks in the Dental Practice

A team of Swedish and Swiss researchers recently published a systematic review of the literature on reducing the risks of microbial transmission in dental aerosols in the Journal of Dental Research. Takeaways from the review include the following:

  • Preprocedural mouthrinsing with 0.2% chlorhexidine is effective at decreasing bacteria contained in aerosols.
  • No strong evidence supports the efficacy of antimicrobials against the viral transmission of SARS-Co-V-2. However, povidone iodine and hydrogen peroxide show initial promise.
  • Oral health professionals must be vigilant in remaining up to date on the latest research regarding safe practices during the global pandemic.
