While it is well known that consuming too much sugar has negative consequences, emerging research is demonstrating that high-fructose corn syrup may exert specific, unique effects on both systemic and oral health.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

After reading this course, the participant should be able to:

  1. Compare and contrast high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) and refined sugar.
  2. Discuss the composition of HFCS.
  3. Identify the effects of fructose on systemic and oral health.
