Psychosis Presents in Some Patients With COVID-19

While rare, healthcare providers around the world are seeing COVID-19 patients presenting with severe psychiatric symptoms without a prior history of mental health problems. Physicians have noted patients with paranoia, delusions, and hallucinations. Two studies have identified the presentation of psychosis among a small number of COVID-19 patients (10 out of 153 in a British study and 10 patients in a Spanish hospital). Research is ongoing, but it may be that infection with the novel coronavirus causes inflammatory responses within the brain in some patients, while others experience respiratory, cardiac, or circulatory problems.
