Effects of COVID-19 Are More Severe Among Men Than Women

A new study of more than 5,000 New Yorkers found that regardless of health status, men with COVID-19 fared far worse then women who contracted SARS-CoV-2. Published in Communications Medicine, the study showed that more men needed hospitalization in intensive care units than women. Additionally, the male mortality rate was higher than that for women. These results remained even though most of the female participants were older and had more pre-existing conditions, such as diabetes and obesity, than the healthier, younger male subjects.
