With COVID-19 Numbers Declining, Concern Shifts to Possible ‘Twindemic’

As the world grappled with the global pandemic last winter, one bright spot was the virtually nonexistent flu season. Well, some public health experts warn that not only will COVID-19 carry on through this winter, but we may face a severe flu season, resulting in a “twindemic.” Last winter, only 0.2% of respiratory illnesses were caused by influenza, while in years past, this percentage ranged from 26% to 30%. The flu’s absence in 2020 reduced herd immunity and could leave individuals at greater risk for contracting the flu.
