  2. Explain the relationship between periodontal diseases and AD, including the role of oral bacteria.

Stacey McKinney, RDH, MSEd, is an assistant professor and senior clinic coordinator in the Dental Hygiene Program at Southern Illinois University (SIU) Carbondale. Her teaching responsibilities focus on preventive oral care, teaching methodologies, and advanced periodontics. McKinney has more than 10 years of clinical dental hygiene experience in community-based and general practice. A member of the American Dental Hygienists' Association and American Dental Education Association, she can be reached at: smckinney8@siu.edu.


Kelli D. Whittington, PhD, RN, CNE, is an assistant professor and director of the nursing programs at SIU Carbondale. She has nearly 30 years of experience as a nurse in healthcare, including intensive care unit, oncology, management, and administration settings, as well as academia. She has educated all facets of nurses from certified nurse assistants to baccalaureate-prepared registered nurses to doctoral level registered nurses.


Jennifer McKinnies, RDH, PHDH, MS, has nearly 30 years of experience in the field of dentistry. She currently serves as an assistant professor and clinical director in the Dental Hygiene Department at Southern Illinois University (SIU) Carbondale. McKinnies is the founder of the SIU Give Kids a Smile program, which has provided free dental care to more than 2,500 children across Illinois. Her teaching responsibilities include local anesthesia, research methodologies, and educational methodologies.
