Can the Novel Coronavirus Change Our Genetic Code?

A hotly debated article based on in vitro evidence suggests that SARS-CoV-2 may insert its own genetic blueprint into the DNA of those who become infected with COVID-19. This would explain why some patients continue to experience positive viral RNA tests even after they have recovered from COVID-19. The MIT researchers found that the inserted genetic code was not strong enough to create more virus, but hearty enough to initiate a positive PCR test. Some researchers believe the results, which were published online in PNAS, are more likely related to the methods used in the study rather than the actual transfer of genetic materials.
