The Next Generation of Fluoride Treatment

As a full-time hygienist, I have been challenged to find an extraordinary fluoride treatment. The wish list of conveniences for the patient and clinician is arduously long. After 4 decades of evaluating fluoride, I can unequivocally disclose, my search for the perfect fluoride varnish is over. Allow me to introduce Kettenbach’s Profisil^®.

Patient Expectations

Profisil^® is a 5% sodium fluoride varnish in a highly mucosa-friendly, pleasantly flavored dimethicone gel. This unique formulation has no ethyl alcohol, eliminating any burn or tingle and reducing the potential of soft tissue irritation. There is no colophony (rosin), which averts clumping or rosin-based allergies. This patient-friendly formula presents truly transparent and colorless. Optimal esthetics is a chief concern for most adults. Additionally, Profisil^® has a genuinely unflavored alternative. The unflavored varnish improves outcomes for younger patients and adults with pharyngeal reflex. Additional flavors of mint and berry are exceptionally mild and pleasing to the palate.

Clinician Expectations

Profisil^® addresses many clinical prerequisites, making it a perfect choice for patient use. The formula is designed to securely adhere to tooth surfaces for several hours while releasing 22,600 ppm of fluoride. This protective coating occludes dentinal tubules with calcium fluoride crystals, up to 24 hours post-application. The viscosity is smooth and creamy, making it easy to spread and mitigating difficult-to-access areas.

The single dose blister with brush included has a foil cover that opens easily. It is unnecessary to dry teeth prior to application, thus reducing chairside time and increasing patient comfort. Profisil^® contains no gluten, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, sesame, corn, shellfish, eggs, or dairy products — hence eliminating risk of allergy.

Due to the silicone nature, Profisil^® does not clog suction devices. It is completely transparent, allowing for placement prior to the dentist’s examination. Impressively, the consistency of Profisil^® varnish is so lubricious, I intentionally spread a small amount on the lower lip and ask patients to rub their lips together for an amazing moisturizing experience. Even gentlemen appreciate lip hydration post-prophylaxis.

Early in my career, fluoride was utilized for decay prevention. Over time, the benefits of remineralization became better understood. Today, fluoride varnish is used not only for decay prevention but for the variety of remineralization scenarios such as decalcification, xerostomia, white spot lesions, clenching/grinding, poor saliva quality, hypersensitivity, and more.
