A Closer Look At The Prevalence of Periodontitis

The prevalence of chronic periodontitis continues to be widely studied on both a national and international scale. The high rate of periodontitis among adults worldwide is concerning, with prevention and treatment strategies becoming increasingly important topics of conversation. “Exploring Prevalence and Prevention,” a special continuing education course developed in collaboration with the American Academy of Periodontology and sponsored by Colgate, provides an overview of the prevalence of chronic periodontitis and a discussion of the comprehensive periodontal care that aims to prevent plaque-induced gingivitis and chronic periodontal diseases. Turn to page 53 for up-to-date information on this subject, as outlined by Satish Kumar, DDS, MDSc, a resident in the Division of Periodontology, Diagnostic Sciences, and Dental Hygiene at the Ostrow School of Dentistry, University of Southern California in Los Angeles.

New Prophy Angle Supports Oral Cancer Awareness

More than 45,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral or pharyngeal cancer this year, according to the Oral Cancer Foundation. Routine patient screening is critical to detecting oral cancer in its earliest stages. As dental hygienists are charged with conducting comprehensive oral examinations, they play an important role in early oral cancer detection. To highlight the necessity of performing oral cancer screenings while conducting oral examinations, the Oral Cancer Foundation has launched an awareness campaign—Be Part of the Change®—specifically for dental hygienists. To encourage clinicians to routinely perform such screenings, Earth City, Missouri-based Young Dental introduced the Classic Burgundy Petite Web™ disposable prophy angle in April, which is Oral Cancer Awareness Month.
