Supplement Highlights the Cardiovascular/Periodontal Link

Research reveals there is some association between periodontal diseases and cardiovascular diseases (CVD), although causality has yet to be demonstrated. This special continuing education supplement—the second installment of a four-part series sponsored by Colgate in collaboration with the American Academy of Periodontology—presents the evidence base that supports this relationship. Written by Nabil F. Bissada, DDS, MSD, chair of the Department of Periodontics at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, this 2-unit continuing education course also addresses the role that infections and periodontal pathogens play in CVD, the influence of inflammation on the development of both periodontal diseases and CVD, and what is needed to establish causality between the two. As the oral-systemic link is further established, Bissada asserts that periodontal care will become integral to health maintenance, and the role of oral health professionals will expand to become part of a larger system of health care providers. Handheld X-Ray Device Company Hits Milestone

Orem, Utah-based Aribex™ Inc, maker of the NOMAD™ handheld X-ray system, announced that it has sold 15,000 devices. The product, which was launched 10 years ago, has gained popularity among oral health professionals due to its portable intraoral X-ray technology. The NOMAD is a lightweight, battery-operated handheld system designed to improve workflow and flexibility in the operatory, as well as provide options for off-site provision of oral health services in settings such as schools and long-term care facilities. Because it is portable, the NOMAD reduces operatory equipment costs and enhances the ease in which X-rays are captured.
