Supply Shortages Interfere With Community Water Fluoridation

Officials in Dover, New Hampshire, had to cease the community’s water fluoridation program due to the lack of available sodium fluoride. While oral health professionals do not expect a short blip in the fluoridation of the area’s water to exert serious oral health effects, the reinstatement date remains unknown due to supply chain issues. And Dover is not alone. The American Dental Association (ADA) notes that three types of fluoride are used in community water fluoridation: fluorosilicic acid, sodium fluoride, and sodium fluorosilicate. While most areas use fluorosilicic acid, those that add sodium fluoride will experience issues due to its current short supply and high cost. The ADA suggests this shortage will be short lived.
