ADHA and DENTSPLY Team Up to Promote Dental Hygiene Research
Chicago, February 9, 2009—The American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA) and DENTSPLY International are proud to announce a new program aimed at promoting dental hygiene research. Beginning this year the DENTSPLY/ADHA Graduate Student Clinician Program will sponsor one graduate level dental hygiene student from each U.S. Dental Hygiene program offering a Masters of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene to present his/her research at the annual American Dental Hygienists Association Center for Lifelong Learning at the Annual Session in June of each year. Each student representative receives an expense paid trip from DENTSPLY to the annual session city where they will present their research findings in a poster presentation format.
“We are very excited to work with DENTSPLY on such an ambitious program,” said Diann Bomkamp, RDH, BSDH, ADHA President. “In the ever-advancing arena of dental hygiene, research is a cornerstone of the profession. We feel that this program offers a wonderful opportunity to further engage students in an area which can move the profession forward.”
Each accredited dental hygiene program will nominate one outstanding graduate student project based on criteria to represent the school at the ADHA Annual Session. Qualifying research would include clinical or basic science research, which supports the research priorities identified in the National Dental Hygiene Research Agenda and contributes to the dental hygiene knowledge base. Two or more students may develop the research for the poster presentation but only one (1) student from each school is eligible to present the poster for judging and only one student will receive financial support from DENTSPLY International. The poster session will be judged and awards will be presented. All participants will be honored at a reception at the ADHA Center for Lifelong Learning. In addition, the winning student from the ADHA competition will be awarded an expense paid trip to the ADA Annual Session and will be recognized at their Student Clinician ADA reception.
“DENTSPLY is proud to be a foundational advocate for the profession of dental hygiene,” said Dr. Leonard Litkowski, Director of Clinical Research & Education for DENTSPLY Professional. “The purpose of this joint venture with the ADHA is to recognize and encourage original research for the advancement of the dental hygiene profession. This is one example of DENTSPLY’s acknowledgement of the next generation of leaders in dental hygiene.”
