The State University of New York’s (SUNY) Erie Community College (ECC) in Williamsville has named Nicole Greco, BSDH, MA, head of the Department of Dental Hygiene. The New York native assumed her new role in July, after the retirement of Joseph Sowinski, DDS. Greco was the valedictorian of her class in the New York University (NYU) Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene program. She began teaching at her alma mater at age 20—the youngest in the program’s history. Between NYU and her latest appointment, Greco served as assistant director of pre-clinic at Columbia University in New York, where she also earned a Master of Arts in Health Education, and program director of the dental hygiene program at Baker College in Flint, Michigan. Greco is a member of Dimensions of Dental Hygiene’sPeer Review Panel and a frequent contributor.

“I am so proud to be part of the SUNY family, especially growing up in New York. It is an honor to join such an amazing organization,” Greco tells Dimensions of Dental Hygiene. “Dr. Sowinski created a well-run, competitive program,” she added. Greco hopes that her unique insight as a dental hygienist in both practice and education will add to the program. “This is the first time ECC has had a dental hygienist serving as program director,” she noted.

ECC’s dental hygiene program places high value on flexible, affordable, and accessible educational programs, and promotes enrichment through skills, service, and partnership. Hands-on training for the program’s students includes delivery of oral care to the community, through the school’s free dental clinic.
